How do I prepare an ASR suspect sample for diagnosis?

When submitting samples for diagnosis, all soybean rust suspect samples must meet the following requirements:

  • 20 leaflets with suspect symptoms should be submitted
  • Place dry leaflets flat between dry paper toweling
  • Place leaflets with toweling into two layers of zip lock plastic bags. Label bags clearly with a permanent marker providing: date, host plant, collector's name, phone number, appropriate supervisor/DSM contact information, collection location within the field, location of the field, county, township & section, and nearest intersection. GPS information is helpful if available. Or you may use the Specimen Form.
What happens after I submit a sample for diagnosis?

If the suspect sample is determined to be ASR by the Plant Clinic diagnostician, and if it is the first observation of the disease in Illinois, then the sample will be sent to the USDA facility in Ft. Detrick, MD for genetic comfirmation (PCR analysis). The sample processing time for the first confirmation of ASR in Illinois is estimated at 3-5 days. After PCR confirmation of ASR, the person submitting the sample will be notified. The confirmed ASR observation will also immediately be reported through the National Plant Diagnostic Network.

All suspect ASR samples subsequent to the initial detection of the disease in Illinois can be diagnosed in about 24 hours by the DDDI and the University of Illinois Plant Clinic. In the event that higher than normal numbers of suspect samples are submitted to Illinois DDDI labs and Plant Clinic, the sample turnaround time may be more than 24 hours. Immediately after the suspect sample has been diagnosed, the person submitting the sample will be notified.

The DDDI labs and Plant Clinic are open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. These labs are not open on weekends and holidays.
